James Nowak

James Nowak was born in Wisconsin in 1956. He was raised in a quiet island community bordered by the Pacific Northwest mountain ranges. He began working with oils and pastels at the age of six and progressed to ceramics in high school. While studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington, he also taught ceramics at a local community center. Nowak graduated in 1981 with a BMSE degree and began working for the U.S. Navy as an assistant nuclear engineer aboard submarines. Nowak worked nights as a nuclear engineer and during the days he pursued his love for glass. He studied at the Pratt School of Fine Arts and the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. Much of his work today is influenced by the raw grandeur of the maritime Pacific Northwest. He learned how to blow glass using the team approach from many notable artists such as Dale Chihuly, Benjamin Moore, Richard Royal, Dante Marioni, William Morris and Stephan Dale Edwards. Nowak says the one who had the greatest influence on him was Dale Chihuly while working on one of his winter glassblowing teams. Nowak uses assorted combinations of glass cane, murrini, dichroic glass and orbs. He is known for his mastery of incorporating multiple colors and precisely made cane, murrini, dichroic glass into large difficult to control glass art pieces. Each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. ARTIST STATEMENT "On a different level my work carries a message about boundaries. The boundaries between order and chaos. Metamorphically an island represents order and the sea chaos. The surface of my work depicts colorful abstractions of flora and fauna. I work with reflective and transparent areas. This allows some things o be seen while hiding others, evoking a sense of adventure and discovery."
