| The husband and wife team of Scott and Laura Curry were both born and raised in Tacoma, WA. After their marriage in 1982, Scott began a formal apprenticeship training as a machinist at the Puget Sound Shipyard. During that time he began taking design and drawing courses at Olympic College. It was at that time he became fascinated with glass after watching a documentary on glassblowing. In 1986 he attended Pratt Fine Arts School in Seattle, WA studying under Martin Blank. With his technical skills as a machinist, he built a studio at their home. In 1989, Scott and Laura began working together blowing glass while raising their three children. Their current work consists mainly of vessels, many of which are sculpted shapes with rich transparent jewel tone colors. On many of these pieces they add silver wraps and abstract shapes of silver leaf. "Glass is a very sensual medium, but it can also be very cruel. It is limiting in its fragility and sensitivity to the elements as it is being created, but it also gives one a chance for great self expression in both form and color", says Scott. |
